About the Artist
Brisbane based artist Cath Lakshman paints semi-abstract works that require the viewer to set aside conventional notions of form and colour. Cath hopes to engage the audience with emotive and visual punch. She has exibited work in a solo exhibition at the reputable Counihan Gallery in Melbourne and has been recognised in the Australian Art Almanac. As an enthusiastic supporter of environmental conservation, she has participated in the Art For Sharks Auction three years running. Cath's compositions have most recently been shown at the Steven Street Gallery, Yandina.
Artist Statement
Cath Lakshman uses the realms of Still Life to place domestic objects in both natural and built environments. Selected family artefacts are the central actors in this, reflecting values, aspirations and the patterns of life worn into a snippet of time. The chipped pot, the faded ceramic figurine or a wilting bloom portray history, knowledge and the human condition with all its’ drama, depth and wit. This artist displays unconventional composition and colour to move the static subject into a reimagined life where there is tail wagging, story telling and the legacy of a memory.
These works draw inspiration from spaces reclaimed by plant and beast after or alongside human activity. Suburban decay is casually absorbed by nature. A crumbling wall, a disused quarry now full of rain, abandoned flood plains - all can accommodate the calm focus of still life.
