Fibre work can be challenging, patience is essential and gratification the reward”

Giant Cross-Stitch Fashion is her ‘jam’ and fibre her medium — Leanne Dew, a long-term Noosa resident loves to wet felt with wool, weave with vintage yarns and rope. In 2017, with a shared love of Banksy art, a florist friend engaged Leanne to ‘pretty-up’ an industrial fence which is how her giant cross-stitching street/wall art was born. Creating for both indoor and outdoor by using commercial fabric off-cuts called t-shirt yarn, Leanne sources from all over Australia.

After cross-stitching onto Avery wire, each knot is checked and secured in place with PVC glue, the front lightly sprayed with UV sun and rain liquid for colour preservation and if the work is located outside or in direct sunlight, then a basic six monthly maintenance of a uv spray does the job. The creation process takes months and inspiration ranges from just pretty colours to the emotional charge to be found in grunge art. Leanne says fibre work can be challenging, patience is essential and gratification the reward.

Her most recent work takes model Kate Moss as the ‘inspo’ with a twist of Louis Vuitton, now framed and sized at 233 x 111cm it’s a signature statement like no other. Engage with this unique work by Leanne Dew and learn more of the Kate Moss back story at Stevens Street Gallery.
