These paintings are inspired by some of the rugged features and outlooks in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.
These paintings are from an ongoing series of landscape works that utilise an evolving technique that employs the use of black line work that is blocked in with colour producing a bold visual effect. The additional multi layering of glazes combined with texture and rubbing back generate a wide variety of tonal values that create a sense of depth and luminosity. The additional use of photoluminescent powder as a final coating brings the art to life at night in the dark as it glows with a magical luminescence. The imagery is from memory and imagination inspired by being present in and movement through natural environments, but at times is also taken from photographic references. The underlying emphasis is to create a harmonic balance of colour and form that connects with the viewer and their individualised experiences within natural settings.

Wayne Smith has been a practising freelance artist for the past 30 + years with a broad range of experience from solo shows through to venue theming, murals and public art. He completed his formal arts studies at Queensland College of Art gaining a Degree in Fine Art. After many years working as a project artist he returned to fine art concentrating on commissions and marketing his work through retail art galleries on the Gold Coast. His preferred mode of working is developing different series of works, which, he states, allows him the flexibility and creative playfulness to explore techniques and styles appropriate to the content and subject matter at hand. His recent move to the Sunshine Coast has resulted in the development of the two current streams of work with themes relating to earth and water. In the landscape inspired works the image field moves from abstract pattern fields through to more representational techniques. The use of bold dark line work reminiscent of woodblock prints combined with fluid painterly techniques is original and unique and invokes a romanticised other worldly element with colour, form and line generating mood and intensity. These works come out of a deep commitment to his practice and a desire to share with others visual forms that are inspired by the natural world and elements within it. He believes bringing such nature inspired imagery into the home or business allows us to honour our connection to nature. His experience has also encompassed many commissions for residential, corporate and public settings. He enjoys collaborating with clients in bringing their dream to fruition should they wish to commission artwork for a specific purpose, size or location. His current activities are involved in collaborating with collective art outlets such as Steven Street Gallery and affiliates where his work may be purchased.
