The Far Side of Afternoon

For Rachel Prince, it is often a fleeting moment of light that transforms an everyday landscape into something worth remembering. Inspired by road trips, coastal landscapes and the expansive views of sky and mountains surrounding her home, Rachel creates atmospheric contemporary paintings that explore the changing relationship between light, land, sea and sky . Her work is particularly drawn to those moments when the landscape feels charged with possibility — storm clouds gathering over open fields, sunlight breaking through a darkened sky, reflections appearing across the ocean or a road disappearing towards the horizon. Dramatic skies often dominate her compositions, creating a wonderful sense of movement, scale and anticipation. Rather than simply documenting a place, Rachel paints the feeling of experiencing it. Shifting light becomes a way of capturing memory and emotion, transforming familiar Australian landscapes into evocative moments that feel both deeply personal and instantly recognisable. There is a beautiful tension within her paintings between stillness and movement, darkness and illumination . Fleeting pockets of light emerge through richly layered skies and landscapes, reminding us how quickly an ordinary view can become extraordinary. Rachel's original landscape paintings invite viewers to pause and reconnect with those brief, beautiful moments in nature that stay with us long after we have moved through them.
