Burning the Sugercane

Exploring the relationship between light, atmosphere and memory, Andrew Hillhouse creates richly textured contemporary Australian paintings that capture the emotional essence of the natural environment. Working from his studio in the Eumundi hinterland of Queensland, his paintings are less about recording a place and more about expressing the fleeting experience of being within it. Using layered acrylic paint, translucent glazes and tactile surfaces, Andrew builds luminous compositions that shift between abstraction and recognition. His intuitive approach invites viewers to slow down and discover subtle changes in colour, texture and light, allowing each artwork to reveal new details over time. With a background in architecture and formal visual arts training, Andrew brings together technical precision and expressive mark making in his ongoing series, On The Nature of Daylight . Inspired by the changing qualities of light across the Australian environment, his paintings create immersive experiences that celebrate atmosphere, perception and quiet contemplation.
