Maggie Buckle

  • In one career change, Maggie turned her extreme neuroticism into ‘artistic sensibilities’. Formerly a building designer, she’s been sculpting wobbly cardboard buildings and painting nonsensically in art classes since the age of six. As paintings don’t need to be structurally sound, she figures it’s safer for everyone that she just pursue that outlet some two decades on.

Influenced by fauvist palettes, surrealists Leonora Carrington and Frida Kahlo, her art history studies and time as a street-art instructor, Maggie’s work is introspective, wry, and a bit blobby. In her first year as a working painter, she near emptied her studio, shipped commissions nationally, sold originals at Stevens Street Gallery within hours and tried to be cool about all of the above. Maggie has a few artistic ambitions but ultimately, walking into the studio of a morning to paint is her pinch-me moment.
