Kate Marek

Long before a painting reaches the studio wall, award winning Australian artist Kate Marek is already immersed in her subject. It may be a quiet morning painting en plein air beside the Brisbane River, days spent exploring Queensland’s coastline, or an early visit to the Brisbane Flower Market in search of blooms that catch the light just so. These moments of direct observation form the foundation of her contemporary Australian landscape and floral paintings, where light, colour and atmosphere become as important as the places and flowers themselves.

Based in Brisbane, Kate has dedicated more than two decades to refining her practice, combining a background in visual arts, animation and education with an enduring commitment to painting from life. Working predominantly in oils, she returns to familiar locations and seasonal blooms again and again, fascinated by the endless variations of light, weather and colour that transform even the most familiar subjects into entirely new experiences.

Kate’s paintings celebrate more than scenery or botanical beauty. They capture the fleeting moments when time seems to slow and the natural world quietly reveals its rhythm. Richly layered brushwork, luminous colour and confident painterly expression invite viewers not simply to observe a place, but to feel present within it.

A finalist and recipient of numerous prestigious art awards, Kate’s work has earned recognition from collectors and judges alike, with original paintings held in private collections throughout Australia and internationally. As her practice continues to evolve, she remains devoted to painting from life, allowing each new collection to deepen her exploration of Australia’s remarkable landscapes and flora.
