Alex Louisa
-
Based near Brisbane, Alex Louisa mainly works with oil paint, PanPastel and watercolour, but she also loves to experiment with new materials. She graduated with a degree in Journalism and Creative writing, but the need to paint firmly pulled her attention back to her art. Having worked as a graphic artist for 8 years, she now solely focuses on her personal work, while raising her twin boys.
Her work focuses on elements of the natural world that grab her attention, and she loves to get swept away in intricate details. Birds have always been her absolute favourite subject (even her first word was "bird!"), but she also loves to study and paint insects as well. She was always the kid who would stop in her tracks to get a closer look at an interesting bug, and she still finds the creatures just as fascinating today as she did then.
Given the nature of Alex’s detailed work, highlighted in the intricate rendering of bird feathers and patterned moth wings, she also relishes diving into creating textural landscapes. The process of shaping immersive scenery with thick oil paint feels indulgent, and she invites the viewer in to savour the moment with her.
Alex has exhibited within Australia since 2007, and internationally since 2012. She has had a number of solo shows and has been included in over 100 group shows. She also teaches workshops to pass on her love of her favourite materials. She has been a finalist in The Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, The Holmes Art Prize for Realistic Australian Bird Art, The Stanthorpe Art Prize, The Lethbridge 10000 Small Scale Art Award and the Marie Ellis OAM Prize for Drawing.
